The body of evidence that social determinants of health (SDOH) deeply affect the lives and care of patients with cancer continues to accumulate,
1,2 but implementing evidence-based solutions into practice remains a step behind, impeded by challenges such as lack of standardization in screening, varied documentation, workforce shortage, and inadequate availability of social resources.
3,4 The purpose of this study was to pilot an electronic health record (EHR)-based SDOH screening instrument for patients presenting with gastrointestinal cancer in a large regional cancer center, focusing on the feasibility and acceptability of intervention. The objectives were to utilize a real-world setting using existing workforce, capitalize on a standardized form of screening within the EHR, and identify the next level of barriers to overcome to progress towards optimal care outcomes for patients with cancer affected by disadvantage. …
