The German Dermatologic Cooperative Oncology Group-Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial (DeCOG-SLT)
1 and the second Multicenter and Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial (MSLT-II)
2 demonstrated that, for patients with cutaneous melanoma with sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastases, nodal observation with serial ultrasounds is a safe alternative to completion lymph node dissection (CLND). These landmark clinical trials identified no differences in overall survival or disease-specific survival between patients who underwent CLND compared with ultrasound surveillance. As such, there has been a near-universal shift in practice paradigm from CLND to nodal surveillance in these patients, although national patterns remain poorly characterized. …
