In the United States, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer.
1 The majority of colon cancers arise via the adenoma-to-carcinoma pathway. Historically, staging and treatment algorithms have been modeled with this in mind. However, approximately 15% of colon cancer cases arise via microsatellite instability (MSI) as a result of loss of function of a DNA mismatch repair protein.
2 In contrast to microsatellite stable (MSS) disease, predictors of lymph node metastases and association with recurrence are not well defined for MSI colon cancer.
3 Understanding how MSI tumors behave is vital for updating treatment algorithms appropriately. …
