Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is a key component of surgical management of breast cancer, and one of the most challenging facets of BCS remains management of margins. Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society for Radiation Oncology (SSO-ASTRO) consensus guidelines reflect sufficient margins as no ink on tumor for invasive carcinoma and 2 mm margin for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).
1 Various strategies have been published to improve margin status since widespread utilization of these guidelines, including the use of cavity shave margins as published in previous trials driven by Chagpar et al.
2 Utilizing these data from the SHAVE trial, we sought to contribute to the international literature on the role of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as it relates to margin status.
