In no other field of medicine does there exist such unabated controversy regarding clinical management decisions that have profound and often life-defining implications than surgical oncology. As our knowledge rapidly expands regarding the biology, genetic, and social determinants of cancer as well as the technological advancements in surgery, it is our obligation to continually assess and thoughtfully interrogate the scientific evidence that defines what is accepted as “fact” and the standard of care in oncology. It is not surprising that varied interpretations of that evidence and our inherent biases fuel controversy and lead to different opinions regarding the “truth.” To that end, the Society of Surgical Oncology has sponsored, for 15 years, the Great Debates in Surgical Oncology at its annual International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care. In this forum, recognized national/international leaders and experts in their respective fields put forth opposing arguments on salient topics in cancer care that are routinely encountered by surgeons and pose a clinical challenge. A third expert moderator provides perspective and a summary including, when appropriate, a definitive concluding statement. …
