Residual renal function may often be overlooked as an important aspect in the care of patients requiring maintenance renal replacement therapy. In the last decade, there has been more evidence to support the importance of maintaining residual renal function (RRF) in incident dialysis patients. Most of these studies have included patients on peritoneal dialysis, however, more evidence is emerging on hemodialysis patients as well. Since the importance of maintaining RRF has been gaining acceptance, there has been more investigation into identifying risk factors for loss of RRF, thus discovering more ways to optimize management of patients on dialysis by preventing the decline of residual renal function. The goal of this article is to review the literature supporting the importance of residual renal function in patient mortality and morbidity, in addition to identifying risk factors for loss of RRF and strategies to maintain residual renal function. …
