The proven benefits of cancer care at high-volume centers has hastened trends toward the regionalization of complex operations.
1‐3 To date, studies examining the volume-outcome relationship have relied on percentile-based cutoffs to show that patients treated at facilities in higher-volume percentiles have improved outcomes. However, percentile-based thresholds are ultimately arbitrary and do not define clear boundaries for what constitutes high-volume status. We believe there is a need for practical, clinically useful thresholds to define high-volume status based on patient-centered outcomes. In our study, we applied novel methodology to define high-volume status for three complex oncologic operations: pancreaticoduodenectomy, esophagectomy, and major lung resection. …
