I am a dog person. I have long used the phrase, “there is more than one way to skin a cat” without thought to the poor feline victim. On the other hand, I do have to withstand the exasperated eyerolling of my teenage daughter, “You are so old Dad!” when using such phrases. Further investigation into the origin of this phrase, however, will bring some relief to ailurophiles (aka cat lovers). It seems there was no great interest in cat pelts and thus “skinning a cat” was a pejorative term for the parsimonious, as dead cats had no value. This phrase has been theorized to provide a circuitous origin for the proverb discussed. …
