Use of a rectal tube during robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy has generated some interesting discussions on the need for this surgical adjunct. Some surgeons claim that using a rectal bougie can be helpful in identifying the location of the rectum when performing the posterior dissection and many urologists have used this tool. This is probably most true during one’s initial experience while climbing the learning curve. While most would agree that they themselves would not want to be rectally probed, whether this method actually reduces injuries to the rectum is as of yet unproven.
