The 8th International Conference on Mechanisms of Anesthesia (MAC) was held in Toronto from June 16-18, 2010. Meetings in this series bring together clinician-scientists and full-time scientists in order to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms of action of general anesthetics. Many participants have inquired as to the origins of this series, which has now been in existence for 36 years. In this Editorial, we review the history of the MAC conference and the evolution of scientific discovery related to anesthetic mechanisms and finally, propose future directions of inquiry. …
