Are the ergogenic effects of photobiomodulation therapy age-dependent? A randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trial

In 2006, Lopes-Martins et al. [1] demonstrated, for the first time, that specific doses of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) were capable of decreasing the muscular fatigue process in rats. Two years later, Leal-Junior et al. [2] reported performance enhancement in humans with PBMT applied before exercise with free weights until exhaustion. Thenceforth, several studies have been published with PBMT before different exercise protocols [35]. In sight of the growing number of research papers in the field, the most recent meta-analysis concluded that PBMT may reduce muscle fatigue and improve exercise performance [6], while possible mechanisms have been hypothesized in the literature [7]. …
