Up to 15% of patients are experienced as “difficult” by their providers.13 “Difficult” patients are more likely to have personality disorders,4 depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders. 2, 3 While most studies focus on patient characteristics, one found that provider factors were important; younger providers and those with a more biomedical orientation reported more encounters as difficult.2
