Sirs: Copper is an essential trace metal and component of many key enzymes and proteins involved in the structure and function of central and peripheral nervous system, hematopoesis and skeletal tissues. Acquired copper deficiency syndromes are rare because of its ubiquitous distribution in food and low daily requirement (1–1.5 mg/d). However, a progressive myelopathy due to copper deficiency has recently been reported in patients with high-dose oral zinc ingestion and malabsorption after gastric surgery [
