Severe sepsis is still a major cause of postoperative morbidity and mortality after abdominal surgery. Despite recent progress in understanding the immune conditions of abdominal sepsis, there is a high postoperative incidence (9-12%) and lethality (42-80%) caused by septic complications after major visceral surgery. Therefore, many aspects of the pathophysiology and immunology of sepsis need further elucidation.
