In 2001 more than 5.6 million patients visited the emergency departments in the United States because of chest pain [1]. Of these 1.4 million patients were admitted with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). At this moment no data are available for the European Community. ACS is used to describe acute myocardial infarction, and unstable angina pectoris. In its lack of specificity, the term ACS reflects the difficulty in differentiating between myocardial infarction and unstable angina pectoris at the time of presentation [2]. …
