The medical treatment for chronic anal fissure has received a great deal of attention over the last few years. In addition, the popularity of the internet with many medical websites has now educated patients to seek alternatives to surgical therapy for anal fissure. Interestingly, anal fissures have a long history dating back to Brodie where he initially described this condition as a contracture of the anal sphincter.[
1] Surgery for this condition was popularised by Eisenhammer as early as 1951.[
2] In fact, surgery has been a mainstay of therapy for anal fissure for years because of its overwhelming success in treating this condition. Cure rates in excess of 98% have been uniformly reported with lateral internal sphincterotomy. …
