Novel treatment strategy for refractory hemorrhagic cystitis following radiation treatment of genitourinary cancer

Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a potential life-threatening complication after pelvic radiation for genitourinary cancer (GUC). This devastating condition occurs when the bladder vasculature undergoes tissue remodeling resulting in obliterative endarteritis [1]. The resulting poorly vascularized tissue becomes fibrotic and prone to easy damage, causing epithelial denudation, chronic ulceration, or vascular telangiectasia. Patients with chronic refractory HC can have blood loss significant enough to require transfusion or surgical intervention. …
