This handbook has been published as part of Pittsburg Critical Care Medicine series with the aim to provide clinicians with concise, evidence based guidance on management of critically ill children. The contributors are experts in the field, primarily from North America. The handbook briefly covers important aspects of pediatric intensive care with 20 chapters ranging from resuscitation to advanced care like extra corporeal life support and organ specific disorders. The book provides relevant concise text, tables, flow diagrams and schematic diagrams. Essential principles of critical care monitoring and pharmacology are also reviewed. Transport of critically ill children, which is by speciality itself, is written to the point with emphasis on different modes of transport and their advantages as well as limitations. Though this book provides updated concise information in chapters addressing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, more details on etiology, pathophysiology and management would be desirable in chapters on commonly faced gastrointestinal, endocrinological, renal and hematological disorders in pediatric critical care. This book concludes with a chapter on end of life care and supportive care which is also an essential part of critical care services. More schematic diagrams are desirable in the chapter on ‘Procedures’. The handbook provides to the needs of pediatric post graduates, practicing pediatricians working in PICU for a quick reference on evidence based management of critically ill children.
