The 5th annual Cancer Vaccines and Immunotherapy Colloquium at Walker's Cay was held under the auspices of the Albert B. Sabin Vaccine Institute on 5–8 March 2003. A select group of 36 scientists representing academia, biotechnology, and the pharmaceutical industry discussed the latest developments in basic science and clinical trials of cancer vaccines. This field has received increasing attention as preclinical developments and clinical applications have begun to demonstrate the usefulness of this promising approach to cancer treatment. Besides their formal presentations and discussions, the participants held informal discussions among themselves at recreational activities. The unique venue, a tropical island in the Bahamas, fostered close interactions among the participants and promoted the purposes of the meeting: development of therapeutic and preventive cancer vaccines.
