Narben sind das permanent verbleibende Zeichen tieferer Verletzungen der Dermis, sie entstehen im Rahmen der Wundheilung. Abhängig von individueller Disposition, Lokalisation, Ursache und Heilungsverlauf kann es infolge einer pathologisch veränderten Wundheilung mit konsekutiv vermehrter Bildung von Narbengewebe zum Auftreten von hypertrophen Narben und Keloiden kommen. Eine länger persistierende Entzündung in tieferen Hautschichten wird hingegen für die Entstehung von atrophen Narben verantwortlich gemacht. Vor allem hypertrophe Narben und Keloide sind häufig mit Juckreiz, Schmerzen und Funktionseinschränkungen assoziiert, sodass eine Behandlung zumeist medizinisch indiziert ist. Das aktuelle Spektrum etablierter Verfahren zur Behandlung von überschießenden Narben wurde zuletzt durch den Einsatz von 5-Fluorouracil und verschiedenen Laserverfahren erweitert. Fraktionierte Laser-Anwendungen führen bei der Behandlung von atrophen Narben zu überzeugenden Ergebnissen.
