Weltweit waren 2016 ca. 36,7 Mio. Menschen mit HIV infiziert, davon erhielten ca. 20,9 Mio. Menschen eine antiretrovirale Therapie (ART). Knapp die Hälfte der HIV-Infizierten sind Frauen (48,5 %). Der verbesserte Zugang zur ART hat global zu einem Rückgang AIDS-assoziierter Todesfälle von bis zu 70 % geführt. In Deutschland waren 2016 ca. 75.700 Menschen mit HIV infiziert, hierunter waren 61.200 Männer bei ca. 3100 HIV-Neuinfektionen. Seit Beginn der Epidemie sind in Deutschland 29.800 HIV-Infizierte verstorben. Schätzungen zufolge wissen rund 12.700 Personen in Deutschland nicht, dass sie HIV-infiziert sind.
