Indikationen für viszeralchirurgische Eingriffe sind die kurative oder palliative Behandlung von Tumoren der Abdominalorgane, entzündlicher Erkrankungen wie Cholezystitis, Appendizitis, Pankreatitis, Morbus Crohn, Colitis ulcerosa und clostridienassoziierte Diarrhö, Stoffwechselerkrankungen (Adipositas) sowie Notfälle wie akutes Abdomen oder gastrointestinale Blutungen. Viszeralchirurgische Eingriffe werden zunehmend häufiger bei älteren Patienten mit kardiopulmonalen Begleiterkrankungen durchgeführt. Perioperative Morbidität und Mortalität steigen im höheren Alter und bei höherer ASA-Risikogruppierung an. Unabhängig vom Alter ist das perioperative Risiko bei Notfalleingriffen erhöht.
