Ein Pneumothorax ist definiert als Luftansammlung im Pleuraspalt. Diese führt zum Kollaps der Lunge. Erfolgt der Lufteintritt in den Pleuraspalt infolge eines Traumas (auch iatrogen), wird dies als traumatischer Pneumothorax bezeichnet. Beim Spontanpneumothorax (ohne traumatisches Auslöseereignis) wird weiter unterschieden in einen primären Spontanpneumothorax (auch idiopathischer Spontanpneumothorax), bei dem keine ohne weiteres erkennbare Ursache nachweisbar ist, und einen sekundären Spontanpneumothorax, der infolge einer vorbestehenden Lungenerkrankung entsteht. Die Unterscheidung zwischen primärem und sekundärem Spontanpneumothorax ist letztlich unscharf, da sich auch beim primären Spontanpneumothorax bei sorgfältiger Diagnostik oftmals kleinere, zuvor unbekannte, pulmonale Anomalitäten zeigen.
