Background: Caries management strategies range from the well-established indirect pulp cap, stepwise caries removal (superficial caries are removed, sealed, and the cavity re-entered at a later time to remove remaining caries), partial caries removal (variable amounts of superficial caries are removed and remaining caries sealed in permanently), to restorative techniques involving no caries removal. The Hall Technique (HT) used in this randomized control trial (RCT) is a method for managing carious primary molars by general dental practitioners. Decay is sealed under preformed metal crowns with no caries removal, tooth preparation, or local anesthesia. This technique has been shown to be significantly more successful at a 2-year follow-up than the conventional restorations general dental practitioners were providing. However, a potential problem with sealing in caries is that the carious process may just be decelerated rather than arrested, which simply postpones any consequences of not removing infected dentin. …
