Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical dysfunction contributes to a complex pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Decreased production of adrenal androgens and subtle changes in cortisol production has been observed in RA, particularly in female patients with premenopausal onset of the disease.
