The anoctamin (ANO) family consists of transmembrane proteins in 10 isoforms, with ANOs being broadly expressed in epithelial and non-epithelial tissues.
1 Of these, few studies have reported the function and activation mechanism of ANO9. Previous reports demonstrated that each subtype has either ion channel activity, scramblase activity, or both, but details on these functions are unknown. Recent studies revealed that ANO9 plays important roles in various cancers, such as colorectal cancer
2 and pancreatic cancer;
3 however, the roles of ANO9 in tumor progression in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and the clinical significance of its expression, remain unclear. The aims of the present study were to investigate the roles of ANO9 in the regulation of cancer growth and its clinicopathological significance in ESCC.
