We read with interest the article by Chan and colleagues in the February 2012 issue of
World Journal of Surgery [
1]. Their retrospective study is based on an impressive number of hepatic resections for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim of the study was to identify the risk factors for developing postoperative ascites (POA) and to evaluate its clinical significance in the prognosis of patients with HCC. The authors constructed a nomogram for predicting the probability of POA after liver resection for HCC; this nomogram is based on the identified risk factors and it is used for risk stratifying patients who may or may not benefit from surgical resection. …
