Barrett’s esophagus is quite common, with an incidence in developed countries estimated at about 2 % of the general population. It is found in 4 % of patients undergoing endoscopy and in up to 9 % of patients with “heartburn” [
1]. Its incidence is increasing even after allowing for an increase in the number of endoscopies performed, suggesting a genuinely rising incidence rather than just a higher detection rate [
2]. Barrett’s esophagus is considered a premalignant condition that can ultimately lead to the onset of esophageal adenocarcinoma, a lethal disease with an overall 5-year survival rate of less than 15 % [
3]. Such a dismal prognosis can be improved, however, if the cancer is diagnosed early with the aid of surveillance programs targeting Barrett’s esophagus patients. …
