As in the general population, obesity has become a health problem amongst human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients [
1]. Its prevalence has increased since the beginning of the epidemic [

3] in developed countries but also in resource-limited settings [
4]. HIV infection is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease [
5]. Moreover, adipose tissue may play a role in immune activation, acting as a viral reservoir [
6]. In addition, treatment with combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) has been associated with weight gain and multiple metabolic problems such as dyslipidemia, lipodystrophy, insulin resistance, and increased risk of vascular disease [

9]. Compared to normal weight HIV patients receiving cART, obese patients experience a smaller rise in CD4 cell counts [
