The successful management of medical conditions lacking clear objective findings such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, posttraumatic stress disorder, and chronic pain syndrome is both challenging and complex. Historically, healthcare and rehabilitation professionals, managed care systems, employers, insurance and workers’ compensation systems, and legal systems have struggled to manage these claims. A lack of evidenced-based guidelines and strategies for early identification, intervention, and management have served only to compound the problem. One of the major goals in publishing the Handbook of Complex Occupational Disability Claims: Early Risk Identification, Intervention, and Prevention (Handbook) was to provide a state-of-the-art resource or “how-to” toolbox for managing these complex claims. …
