We read with great interest the published article by Eminovic et al. [
1] on “Malnutrition as Predictor of Poor Outcome after Total Hip Arthroplasty.” The authors present a retrospective study that explored the relationship between protein energy malnutrition (PEM) and outcomes in 220 patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA). PEM, determined by low pre-operative serum albumin and total lymphocyte count (TLC) values, was found to be a predictor of increased post-operative complications at six months. We commend the authors for raising awareness on this oftentimes undetected and overlooked problem, and we would like to raise a few observations about the interpretation of the study results. …
