In the absence of liver cirrhosis or cancer, splanchnic vein thrombosis is rare. Additional risk factors are neoplasia, abdominal inflammatory disease, and inherited and acquired thrombophilia as reported in chronic myeloproliferative disorders (CMPD), i.e. polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia [
