In the previous issue of
Breast Cancer Research, Metz and colleagues characterize hematopoietic growth factor inducible neurokinin-1 type (HGFIN; osteoactivin, Gpnmb, Dc-HIL) as a gene expressed in normal mammary epithelial cells that encodes a protein with tumor suppressor functions in breast cancer [
1]. In contrast, we have recently identified osteo-activin as a novel mediator promoting breast cancer metastasis [
2] and thus feel it is premature to classify osteoactivin as a tumor suppressor in breast cancer. …
