Mundgesundheit und Lebensqualität beim alternden Patienten

Zusammenfassung

Allgemeinerkrankungen und körperliche Einschränkungen nehmen im Alter zu, die Mundgesundheit älterer Menschen reduziert sich im Vergleich zu jüngeren. Parodontalerkrankungen und (Wurzel-)Karies sowie Neoplasien der Mundhöhle treten vermehrt auf. Oftmals verlaufen Zahn-, Mund- und Kieferkrankheiten schwerer. Die Frequenz regelmäßiger Zahnarztbesuche sinkt, andere ärztliche Konsultationen nehmen zu. Durch zahnärztliche Prävention sind jedoch immer weniger Patienten vollständig zahnlos. Zahnverluste und Versorgungen mit (herausnehmbarem) Zahnersatz können Kaufunktion und Ernährung negativ beeinflussen. Funktionelle und ästhetische Einbußen im Vergleich zu natürlichen Zähnen können zudem die Lebensqualität reduzieren. Bei kognitiven und manuellen Einschränkungen kann sich der Mundgesundheitszustand noch deutlicher verschlechtern. Der vorliegende Artikel gibt einen Überblick über die Datenlage zur Mundgesundheit und mundgesundheitsbezogenen Lebensqualität des alternden Patienten.

Der Aufbau von Geweben und Organen während der Embryonalentwicklung wird von den Zellen bemerkenswert choreografiert. Für diesen Prozess braucht es spezielle sogenannte „Organisatoren“. In einer aktuellen Veröffentlichung im Fachjournal Nature Cell Biology berichten Forschende durch welchen Vorgang diese Organisatoren im Gewebe entstehen und wie sie dann die Bildung von Zähnen orchestrieren.

Infolge der Umbenennung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kinderzahnheilkunde in Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kinderzahnmedizin (DGKiZ) wird deren Mitgliederzeitschrift Oralprophylaxe & Kinderzahnheilkunde in Oralprophylaxe & Kinderzahnmedizin umbenannt. Aus diesem Grunde trägt die erste Ausgabe in 2024 erstmalig den neuen Titel.
