We have read with interest the comments by Papaziogas et al. [
1], and we agree with some but not all of their conclusions that procalcitonin is not an early indicator of bowel strangulation. Their study was performed with a methodology similar to that of our experiment [
2], but the number of rabbits used in their groups were too small (
n = 4) to allow their conclusion that procalcitonin is not useful in strangulation. As Papaziogas et al. [
1] planned a study on distal large bowel, we were interested to know if procalcitonin would be useful in proximal small bowel, but we found no positive results of procalcitonin. …
