Abstract
Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus has been used successfully to treat tremor in Parkinson’s disease, and more recently stimulation within the subgenual anterior cingulate has been used to treat intractable depression. While there have been some reports of deep brain stimulation affecting the autonomic nervous system, its use in alleviating the debilitating pain of headaches has a firm neurobiological basis. Stimulation within the posterior inferior hypothalamus is believed to act by modulation of pain transmission within the trigeminal nucleus.
