Since the introduction of laparoscopic adrenalectomy in 1992, the procedure has been widely adopted for the surgical treatment of a wide variety of adrenal tumors.
1 Contrary to the traditional open adrenalectomy, the minimally invasive approach is associated with decreased postoperative pain, morbidity, and hospital stay. In addition, there is shorter recovery and well-known aesthetic benefits. For these reasons, benign adrenal tumors are generally removed via a minimally invasive approach. At present, controversy persists on only the oncologic outcome of the utilization of laparoscopic surgery for known adrenal cancers and large tumors with malignant potential.
