Wang et al. [
1] conducted an exhaustive meta-analysis addressing the issue of a possible role of gender in the mortality rate at short- and long term after NSTEMI. The authors correctly used the term ‘gender’ as it is important to remind that
sex differences are determined by biological differences among women and men;
gender differences arise also from sociocultural processes, such as different behaviours of women and men, exposure to specific environment, different forms of nutrition, lifestyle or stress, or attitudes towards treatments and prevention. In the clinical setting of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and NSTEMI in particular, it appears more appropriate to consider gender differences and not only sex differences. …
