Eine HIV-Infektion liegt vor, wenn HIV-1 oder HIV-2 sicher nachgewiesen wurde. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) bezeichnet den durch HIV induzierten, schweren Immundefekt mit sog. AIDS-definierenden Sekundärerkrankungen (u. a. opportunistische Infektionen, maligne Tumoren). HIV-exponierte Kinder sind Kinder HIV-positiver Mütter. Bei Kindern HIV-infizierter Mütter können mütterliche HIV-Antikörper im Blut nachgewiesen werden.
