Das vorliegende Kapitel befasst sich mit dem Konzept der belastenden Kindheitserlebnisse (engl. Adverse Childhood Experiences, ACE). Zunächst erfolgt eine begriffliche Einordnung und Erläuterung des Konzeptes. Die historische Entwicklung, insbesondere die sog. ACE-Studie, eine der wichtigsten Public Health Studien, werden dargestellt. Darüber hinaus werden das zugrundeliegende Rahmenmodell, die sog. ACE-Pyramide sowie der nationale und internationale Forschungsstand präsentiert. Insbesondere werden aktuelle Befunde einer aktuellen repräsentativen Studie zur Häufigkeit und zu den psychischen und körperlichen Folgen belastender Kindheitserlebnisse dargestellt und die Implikationen für die Versorgungspraxis diskutiert.
