Schmerz ist nicht nur eine unangenehme Empfindung, die es zu vermeiden gilt, sondern auch ein Grund für ein unbefriedigendes langfristiges Ergebnis. Eine optimale Schmerzbehandlung verhindert die Entstehung starker Schmerzen, ohne dass die Patienten unter unerwünschten Nebenwirkungen der Behandlung leiden. Mit Hilfe eines multimodalen Schmerzmanagements können die analgetischen Effekte einer systemischen, regionalen und lokalen Behandlung kombiniert werden, wodurch die Nebenwirkungen einer hohen Opiatdosis oder einer langwirksamen Rückenmarkblockade vermieden werden. Zugleich wird die unmittelbare postoperative Mobilisierung möglich, welche mittlerweile zum Standard in der Hüftendoprothetik geworden ist. Ein funktionierendes Schmerzmanagement umfasst die effektive Behandlung mit einem an den Schmerzpegel adaptierbaren Stufenkonzept und durch einen spezialisierten Schmerzdienst.
