The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is a hypothesized reservoir of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease. This marsupial is widely distributed in North and Central America (Krause and Krause 2006) and is the most abundant in the north of Yucatan (Jones et al. 1974).
