Zusammenfassung

Durch den Nachweis der tatsächlich vorhandenen unterschiedlichen Erregungsabläufe von Borderline-Patienten und Patienten mit Posttraumatischer Belastungsstörung zu einer Kontrollgruppe konnten bisher oft unverständliche Emotionen und Handlungsweisen erklärbar gemacht und Therapeuten und Patienten eine große Bürde abgenommen werden. Für Therapeuten bedeutet es, leichter verstehen und sich einfühlen zu können, für Patienten, nicht mehr als „verrückt“ angesehen zu werden und ihre eigene Welt und die Ursachen für ihr Anderssein begreifen zu können. Die Neurowissenschaften haben dadurch zu einem veränderten Verständnis von Menschen mit Persönlichkeitsstörungen geführt und dadurch die Stigmatisierung vermindert. Ein kurzer Ausflug in die Genetik zeigt, dass die Entdeckung der Neuroplastizität und genetischer Vulnerabilität für psychiatrische Störungen eine große Bedeutung hat.
