Surgical trainees and novices to robotic surgery are often preoccupied with the intricacies of the surgery itself. While knowledge and preparation of key steps for a robotic nephrectomy or prostatectomy are extremely important, the surgical environment of the console should not be disregarded. Although there are established training modules one goes through such as Global Evaluative Assessment of Robotic Skills (GEARS) in residency programs, discussion and guidelines about console settings and ergonomics are limited. And although there is a formal simulator and trainer where the surgeon can prepare for the case, often times the settings a surgeon chooses are based on settings from a training course, mentor, and/or residency/fellowship program. …
