One of the most effective advocates for children was also one of the greatest writers in the history of the English language: Charles Dickens. Wildly popular in his own day and now recognized as a literary master, Dickens probably did more than any other author to raise public awareness of the plight of children, laying the groundwork for a variety of social reforms.
