A 53-year-old woman, who had been hospitalised for elective gynaecological surgery 4 weeks earlier, developed a black discolouration of her tongue. During her hospital stay, she had undergone a 3-week course of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and metronidazole [dosages, routes and times to reaction onset not stated] for suspected postoperative pelvic infection. Tongue scrapings were positive for a Candida infection. She was diagnosed with lingua villosa nigra caused by a Candida infection secondary to antibacterial therapy. She was treated with fluconazole and her tongue normalised within 7 days. …
