Previous studies have reported the utility of systemic inflammatory and nutritional indices, such as the prognostic nutritional index or modified Glasgow Prognostic Score, as prognosticators for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

2 However, these predictors also remained insufficient due to their limited representation and reflection of the patients’ general status. The Naples prognostic score (NPS) is a scoring system based on albumin, cholesterol concentration, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio that reflects host inflammatory status, malnutrition, and survival for several malignancies.
