Retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcoma (RPS) has been exceedingly difficult to study in the past. One major contributor is its rarity. With only 13,000 new cases per year in the United States, RPS represents <1% of all human malignancies.
1 Compounding this issue is the fact that RPS is comprised of various histologies (of which there are more than 70) portending different biologic behavior. As such, they often must be studied independently. Before international workgroups, such as the Transatlantic Australasian Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Working Group (TARPSWG), it has been a challenge accruing enough patients to power prospective studies, leading to little level 1 data available to guide clinical decisions. The recent STRASS trial marked a milestone for the RPS community by illustrating that through international collaboration, randomized trials can be performed that can ascend the aforementioned hurdles and provide quality data to guide RPS therapy.
2 In light of this recent work, our group felt it was pivotal to reassess the current state of therapeutic strategies for RPS nationally to identify recent trends and potential areas of heterogeneity. …
