We read with interest Ferrazza and Palange’s Letter to the Editor (Ferrazza and Palange
2009) about our manuscript “End-tidal pressure of CO
2 and exercise performance in healthy subjects” recently published in the
European Journal of Applied Physiology (Bussotti et al.
2008). We view the interest generated by our paper positively and appreciate the views of Drs. Ferrazza and Palange. We agree in large part with their interpretation, and it appears that their thoughts are in line with our original ideas. Indeed, in our manuscript, we made a point of emphasising that end-tidal

2) should be considered as a multifactorial marker, reflecting both ventilatory efficiency (i.e., implying a particular ventilatory pattern) and the metabolic production of CO
2, rather than simply the expression of a certain behaviour of tidal volume (
V T) and respiratory rate (RR). …
