Currently, with excellent survival and good cure rates for early-stage breast cancer,
1 efforts have been focused on the improvement of cosmetic results, satisfaction level, and quality of life of women with breast cancer after surgery. After randomized evidence for equivalent overall survival between breast conservation therapy (BCT) and mastectomy, the quality of life of more women with localized breast cancer will benefit from BCT. However, local recurrence rates ranging 10% and 20% at 10 years after BCT urgently suggest the need for careful pretreatment selection of patients for BCT who are at low risk of local recurrence.
